What is a central configuration management database?

Configuration Management Database is a repository that stores information about IT infrastructure components. It allows you to view, modify and feed all system resources, known as configuration items (CI). It contains a list of items (CI), their attributes and shows the interrelationships between them. The CMDB records the following types of data regarding, among other things:

• computer hardware,
• software,
• nets,
• locations,
• documentation,
• license.

The purpose of the CMDB’s central database is to improve operational decision-making and control the status of IT resources.

• transmission of information – CMDB improves the efficiency of change and resource management in many organizations and automates hardware and software discovery. This enables much faster transport of IT infrastructure information.

Why store information about IT infrastructure components in a CMDB?

The configuration and resource management system allows an organization to increase security and eliminate unused IT resources. CMDB functionality enables:
